Leave a Footprint on Hallowed Ground
The SJCAA Memorial Brick Campaign is a tangible way for those associated with SJC to "Leave A Footprint" outside the former Campus Chapel. The brick program is open to all who share in the history of St. Joseph College, St. Joseph College High School, or St. Joseph Academy. Whether inscribing a brick in your own name or in that of a treasured friend, relative or teacher, you are leaving a memorial on Hallowed Ground to be enjoyed for generations to come. Order now >>
About the Memorial
The SJCAA Plaza is part of the National Memorial Park Walk of Honor, located just outside the former chapel of our beloved campus, which is now the home of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The former St. Joseph College Chapel, now called the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Chapel, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restored to circa 1908 by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, in cooperation with the Daughters of Charity, the chapel was rededicated in August 2007, but the Foundation is still raising funds to defray costs of the renovation. That’s where your "Footprint" can make a difference. More about Memorial Plaza >>
Just outside the chapel entrance is a plaza reserved for memorial bricks inscribed with names of people like you who were affiliated with St. Joseph’s. When that space is filled, more inscribed bricks will radiate from the plaza via several walkways. A bronze plaque containing a brief campus history is already set within the plaza and a second plaque memorializes those who were associated with St. Joseph’s. That inscription reads:
"In memory of all who trod these holy grounds as students of St. Joseph Academy, High School and College, and those who educated, supported, served and cared for them. May their footsteps and those of St. Joseph’s founder, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, echo here for all time."
As of Fall 2012, more than 340 bricks had been placed. The SJCAA Plaza can accommodate many more! Why not order your brick(s) now and "Leave A Footprint" for posterity on our former campus? Order now >>
Inscribe a Brick
Each engravable brick is just $110 and the donation is fully tax-deductible. Formats for wording on the order form are only suggestions. (One Alumna donated a brick for a deceased friend that was inscribed "The Best Roommate Ever.") The only limitation is 18 characters, including spaces, on each of three lines. Order now >>
Locate a Brick
“Is my brick in yet?” That’s one of the most frequently asked questions of the SJC Alumnae Office from people who have ordered memorial bricks for placement in the plaza outside the former Campus Chapel. The answer, from Kathleen Hollenbeck, our Alumnae Liaison: "You know your brick is in the plaza when you receive a postcard indicating the brick has been laid.” You can also use the search feature on the Walk of Honor page for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation; enter SJCAA in the Search by Location field to find your brick. Visit the Memorial
For those wishing to visit the plaza, the Memorial is open daily, dawn to dusk. When you arrive on campus, go to security (Building V) to obtain an ID and parking pass. Because the Memorial is located on federal property, visitors to the campus must present a driver's license or photo ID at the entrance. For visiting hours and current security restrictions, call 301-447-1000. You are welcome to eat on campus; the dining hall welcomes visitors and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. Meal hours vary. Don’t forget your camera!
