Remembering Sister Hilda Gleason

We are honored to provide this Tribute to Sister Hilda Gleason, former President, St. Joseph College.

A funeral Mass for Sister Hilda Gleason of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul was offered April 8 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. Sister Hilda died March 28. She was 102 and with the Daughters of Charity for 84 years.

Born in Albany, N.Y., in 1914, Sister Hilda entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg in December 1932. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the former St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and a master’s degree in education administration from Boston University.

Tribute to Dr. John M. Blanche

We are honorDr Blancheed to provide this Tribute to Dr. John M. Blanche, former Theology Professor, St Joseph College, December 18, 1929 to February 18, 2017.

Dr. John Michael Blanche, Doctorate of Sacred Theology, of Fairfield, entered into eternal rest, Saturday, Feb. 18 2017, at age 87. He died peacefully at Transitions Health Care Facility, in Gettysburg, as he was visited by various friends and family. For several years, John had been suffering with breathing problems, mostly due to complications of severe COPD.

Oldest SJC Alumnae Dies at 106

On Sunday, June 5, 2016 Mary Wachter Unglesbee passed away at 106 years old.  Born on March 4, 1910, she was a member of the SJC Class of 1931 graduating with a degree in Music.  She spent the next 75 years teaching, first in Montgomery County, then at the Notre Dame Academy in Libertytown, Md.  She also taught private piano lessons in her home as well as played the organ and directed the Choir at St Peter the Apostle Church, Libertytown, Md.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.

How to honor Marie Long? A daunting objective which I can only aspire to adequately achieve. Marie became a part of my life 45 years ago this past August when, as a freshman at SJC, I began my work study program with the SJCAA. Sister Mary Bernard McEntee was the Alumnae Moderator, Mary Frances Smith (SJC ’63) was the Executive Secretary, and Marie Long was the main cog in the wheel which so efficiently ran the daily operations of the Alumnae Office.

Remembering Sister Mary Jean Horne, Alumnae Sister Emerita

The Alumnae Association Board remembers fondly the many contributions Sister Mary Jean Horne ’48 provided during her service as our Alumnae Sister.
